2025 NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner Ruby Ibarra and The Balikbayans blend hip-hop, jazz, spoken word, and Filipino musical traditions in a performance rooted in identity, resilience, empowerment, and community. Through multilingual lyricism and live arrangements, they explore stories of heritage, belonging, and hope.
Now we have a new star: Ruby Ibarra, a Filipina American rapper from the Bay Area. Ibarra’s Contest entry, “Bakunawa,” stunned this year’s panel of judges with its multilingual, intergenerational band and passionate emcee.
