Sheridan Whiteside – critic, wit, intimate friend of the great and near great – having dined at the home of the Stanleys, slips on their doorstep and breaks his hip. The result is a tumultuous six weeks of confinement as Whiteside turns the Stanley household upside down, forcing everyone in town to cater to his demands. Meanwhile, Whiteside’s secretary gives her notice after falling in love with a local reporter, and Whiteside engages every weapon in his arsenal to keep her in his employ. Subtly funny, slightly raunchy and insidiously clever, this is one of the funniest plays ever written.
