The majority of community colleges in San Diego County receive less than the state average for funding per student. But local education officials hope to change that. For the first time, state lawmakers will hold a hearing tomorrow to tackle the issue. KPBS reporter Beth Ford has more.
The hearing will take place at Grossmont College and focus on equalization in community college funding. The colleges now get money for each student based on a confusing and outdated formula developed thirty years ago.
San Diego Community College District spokesman Barry Garron says the inequalities mean some college districts get millions more in state funding each year.
Garron: "They can provide the microscopes, the counselors, the classrooms, the well-equipped laboratories that other districts on the lower-end of the scale cannot do."
The antiquated funding formula also applies to K-12 funding. New state education secretary Richard Riordan has indicated he would like to revamp the entire funding system. Beth Ford, KPBS news.
