Reactions to Sanders state of the city speech

The speech included many promises and also plenty of nuts and bolts about how to fix the city's daunting financial, legal and structural problems. Mayor Sanders said in the next three years he will turn city government upside down

Sanders: "Because we have faltered does not mean we should shroud this city in shame, it means only that we now have work ahead of us which I pledge to lead, to create here in San Diego a model for efficient accountable and ethical local government."

The mayor never uttered the word bankruptcy but said his budget this year would differ from previous budgets in that it would not use smoke and mirrors to conceal a budget deficit. He said he plans to sell hundreds of millions in bonds privately to cover long overdue water and sewer upgrades a move that will result in rate increase Alison St John KPBS news.
