Activists on both sides of the immigration debate protested at a spot where day laborers gather in Vista over the weekend. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.
San Diego County Minuteman supporters and immigrants' rights activists gathered in a Vons parking lot in Vista.
Minuteman groups have been staging a series of protests at day labor sites around Southern California. They say they want to show that people who hire illegal immigrants are also part of the immigration problem.
However, Claudia Smith with California Rural Leal Assistance says it is not automatically against the law for people to hire illegal immigrants.
Smith: "What federal law says is that when you hire someone on a one time basis, or on an irregular and sporadic basis to do work at your home, there is no obligation to check on status."
Besides, Smith says the majority of the laborers at the Vista site are in the country legally, especially on weekends when legal workers try to pick up extra jobs. Amy Isackson, KPBS News.
