The San Diego County's Airport Authority meeting today over whether it's possible to build a new airport on a military base. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.
A primary review of a joint-use airport on either Miramar, Camp Pendleton, or North Island was the focus of the meeting. Authority staff reported to the board that all three pass initial community and environmental impact reviews.
The military has said repeatedly it's opposed to joint-use. So board member Tony Young says maybe it's time to consider moving operations at Miramar somewhere else, and putting a stand-alone commercial airport on that site.
Young: So if we do not look at this issue in this way, if we don't say, hey, these are some more options other than joint use, than I think we are missing the boat.
The Authority's Strategic Planning Committee voted to recommend to the full board to direct staff to research that idea. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
