More than 1,000 North County students walked out of classes today, to protest legislation in Congress to crack down on illegal immigration. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
In Escondido, students began the day with a protest rally in downtown's Grape Day Park. Then they started marching through the streets.
Scores of students from Escondido's Grant Middle School walked eastward down a busy thoroughfare. Some held Mexican flags, others carried make-shift signs on pizza boxes.
Eighth grader Angel Garcia said he's sick of all the immigrant bashing.
Garcia: They stereotype Mexicans like the stereotype them as Chicanos and gangsters and stuff. But that's not true, man.
Students said they're worried about pending legislation that would make it a felony to be in the country illegally. Many students fear if it became law, their parents would labeled as criminals.
