Organizers of an immigration reform march planned for this Sunday in San Diego hope the event galvanizes Latinos around the county as a political force. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
A broad coalition of unions, social service and faith based organizations have come together to organize the march. Coalition spokeswoman Jessica Nolan says it's the first time these groups have coalesced around an issue.
There are some organizations that are normally competitors who are working together on this issue and to get us together it was difficult. So now that we're together, we're in it for the long haul.
Nolan says save for student walkouts, San Diego's Latino community has been slow to unite to rally for immigration reform because she believes fear and a sense of defeatism dominate the community. She hopes the creation of the coalition and this Sunday's protest help change that.
Organizers expect between 10,000 and 20,000 people to march from Balboa Park to the County Administration Building. They say the San Diego Police have assured them the Border Patrol will not be present. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
