A group of local residents and community leaders will attend a protest rally Monday to show their opposition against a proposed dual-runway at Lindbergh Field. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Adding another runway to Lindbergh is one of nine options being considered by the San Diego Regional Airport Authority. The group is working under a June deadline to determine a new regional airport site.
The airport authority, for the most part, has been analyzing a joint-use option with the military at Miramar Air Base. But military opposition has forced the authority to consider expanding Lindberg.
Residents who would be affected by a dual runway at Lindbergh are fiercely opposed to the idea. Protest organizer Greg Finely is with the Peninsula Leadership Coalition.
Finely: "Any expansion of it is more than fool-hearty its simply not safe. Its never going to be a safe airport and its never going to be an adequate airport based on the small footprint that it occupies."
Finley says residents and community leaders will keep protesting until the expansion option is eliminated as a potential ballot measure. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
