Supporters and opponents of the controversial Sunrise Powerlink brought San Diego County Supervisors into the debate today. The supervisors stopped short of an official position on SDG&E’s proposed transmission line. KPBS Radio’s Andrew Phelps reports.
Supervisor Pam Slater-Price did not take a position, but she says the project’s backers may be framing the debate unfairly. SDG&E says the region needs the power. Opponents say the project isn’t worth the harm to San Diego County’s backcountry. Slater-Price says the project’s supporters make it sound like environmentalists don’t recognize the need for more power.
Slater-Price: That’s not factual. You know, what they’re saying is there are other ways to deliver it.
Supervisors Ron Roberts and Greg Cox did not offer positions, but Cox says the county is running out of other options. Supervisor Dianne Jacob is already on-record opposing the project. Supervisor Bill Horn recused himself from the discussion because he owns stock in SDG&E’s parent company, Sempra. The board may take an official position on the powerline project in the future.
