A Mira Mesa parent plans to meet with San Diego’s School Superintendent about a popular teacher’s role in an annual East Coast field trip. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Bob Turner wants teacher Gerald Gapusan to keep his role as lead chaperone of the field trip. But parents say district officials recently forced Gapusan to stop taking part in the trip after one parent complained he is gay. That parent also claims Gapusan had inappropriate content his My Space page. My Space is a popular website used for socializing. Turner says the district will make a big mistake if they don’t allow Gapusan to lead the trip.
Gapusan: I personally have two kids that have not only gone on the trip, but had him as a teacher. He is an awesome teacher that helped make this a trip of their lifetime, they still talk about it to this day.
Gapusan has led the field trip for the past nine years at Challenger Middle School. Turner says parents have signed a petition and written emails in the teacher’s defense. So far Superintendent Carl Cohn says Gapusan won’t get his role back until an investigation has been completed.
