Green Options for Old South Bay Plant

Environmental groups want the 40-year-old South Bay Power Plant in Chula Vista dismantled. The groups claim the plant is inefficient, outdated and pollutes the air. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce tells us one group believes the plant's power can be replaced with green energy.

The Chula Vista City Council recently voted down a plan to replace the South Bay Power Plant on the city's bayfront. The San Diego Port District owns the plant and is expected to go along with the council's wishes. But the agency that runs the state's electricity power grid won't let the plant close unless other power sources are found to replace it. Environmental Health Coalition Director Laura Hunter's suggestion is go green.

Hunter: It includes something called solar-thermal that could be firmed up with some natural gas firing but or could just operate on its own, solar PV or photo voltaics, wind energy and pump storage.

Hunter says the green options are environmentally-friendly and wouldn't need to use the bayfront location. The waterfront site has been mentioned as a future home of the San Diego Chargers. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
