The San Diego Food Bank has a new leader. Jim Jackson is the former head of the San Diego Rescue Mission . As KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps tells us, Jackson's new job is to rebuild the county's largest food bank.
Jackson is the eighth person to head the food bank since early 2005, when the media uncovered widespread theft within the organization. Donors cut off their funding. Nearly every board member resigned in protest nine months ago.
Jackson says he can win back the community's trust. Just six weeks ago, the food bank broke free of its parent organization, Neighborhood House , which stifled funding for the charity.
Jackson : We are setting our own course. And we are a startup company. We have an independent board. And so, really, for a startup company, we're doing pretty well after six weeks.
Jackson says now he's rebuilding relationships with old donors -- including America's Second Harvest , a national charity that abandoned the food bank last year.
