Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visited a Chula Vista elementary school today to congratulate students and teachers for making big improvements academically. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Otay Elementary School was one of Chula Vista's lowest performing schools three years ago. Now it’s a shining example of how parents and teachers can work together and turn a struggling school around. Otay now shows strong and steady improvement on state test scores. It also satisfied all of the federal benchmarks under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Schwarzenegger wants the rest of California to learn from Otay's success.
Schwarzenegger : This is why we are here today, to put a spotlight on you today. And say: a job well done. Everyone look at this school -- copy it if you're smart. And you're performance will also go up.
Otay school administrators say they restructured and changed their funding priorities to pay for special intervention programs and resources. More than 600 kids go to the school.
