A marine research facility on the UC-San Diego campus is in danger of falling into the ocean. The federal agency that operates the lab wants money to build a new one. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The lab on the UC-San Diego campus does some cutting-edge research into the health of the world's oceans. But the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists say they'd rather not live on the edge. Two of its buildings are in danger of sliding off a cliff into the Pacific.

NOAA Deputy Under Secretary Mary Glackin says a new facility would allow researchers to continue their studies of the ocean.

Glackin : There's a growing recognition that climate change is impacting our ocean. Ocean acidification is one of the things that we're interested in understanding. How that is happening and importantly the impacts of that to living marine resources.

She says the NOAA scientists work closely with Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers to analyze the effects of climate change and ocean acidification on fish species.
