More than three dozen House members have signed on to legislation that would overturn the EPA's decision to deny California permission to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks.
The EPA waiver denial also blocked at least 16 other states that wanted to adopt the California rules.
Lawmakers led by Democratic Representatives Peter Welch of Vermont and Brad Sherman of California planned to unveil the bill on Capitol Hill Thursday. So far there's only one Republican co-sponsor: Congressman David Dreier of Southern California.
The bill may face an uphill battle because it must go through a committee chaired by Michigan Democrat John Dingell, an ally of the auto industry.
A companion bill has been introduced in the Senate by Barbara Boxer of California.
