Baja California law enforcement officials have tied guns used in Saturday’s bloody shootout to some of the most spectacular crimes committed in the region during the last few years. Saturday’s shootout in Tijuana killed 13 people and injured nine. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Baja California’s Attorney General Rommel Moreno says many of guns used in the shootout are linked to eight previous gun battles, murders and attempted murders.
Many of those crimes targeted high ranking police, including the attempted assassination of Rosarito’s police chief.
Many also made headlines, like an attack in 2006 on a crowded Tijuana restaurant that killed a U.S. citizen and a waitress.
There’s also the theft of a body from the morgue in Ensenada after the Baja 1000.That crime has been tied to Tijuana’s Arellano Felix Drug Cartel.
But, Attorney General Moreno still wouldn’t name the drug gangs behind Saturday’s shootout.
Moreno did stress, whoever it’s between, it’s the result of the President’s war on drug traffickers. He says its weakened drug groups and they’re fighting amongst themselves for control.
One of the men injured in the shootout is a U.S. citizen from Los Angeles. Two others have three year old drug charges in the U.S.
