The Governor's latest deficit projection means the San Diego Unified School District may need to find $30 million to $40 million in additional savings for next school year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Governor Schwarzenegger says declining state revenues could push California's budget gap to 20 billion dollars, double his initial projection.
That means San Diego school officials MAY be looking at deeper budget cuts for next school year.
The district has already issued two batches of layoff notices in anticipation of an $80 million loss in state education funding.
The district's Ursula Kroemer says the new figures are not set in stone, but the district is preparing for the worst.
Kroemer: We really have no firm sense of where that could go. What we do know is the projected deficit does look like its growing so we have to be prepared for rolling up our sleeves again.
District officials say they could dip into their reserves, shut down smaller schools or cut more central staff administrators. The state is expected to release a more accurate budget forecast next month.
