Local DMV Workers Protest State Job Cuts
Dozens of state workers rallied at the Chula Vista Department of Motor Vehicles today. They don’t like the governor’s decision to lay off thousands of state workers and cut the pay of tens of thousands of others. The governor says it’s necessary to avoid a cash crisis.
Union Worker Maria Hahnshikman said she skipped her lunch to come support the Chula Vista workers. She is frustrated by the governor.
Hahnshikman : We want him terminated. Believe me, I am so angry, I’m really angry, and sad because some of my coworkers have already been laid off. We all have husbands, we all have kids, mortgage payments, rent payments, car payments.
The local service employees union filed unfair labor practice complaints against the state last week, arguing the governor illegally ignored a process for terminating workers. Employees have been encouraged to take out loans to pay the bills.
