San Diego County is getting more than $7.5 million in grants from the office of homeland security this year. That's an increase of 14 percent from last year.

County Supervisor Greg Cox says the money will be used to support the regional terrorism threat assessment center, and training for local fire districts.

Cox: We'll be able to have additional regional exercises like earthquake drills and also to purchase equipment for first responders like personal protection equipment, detection equipment for biological, chemical, and radiological disasters.

He says the money is helping the county prepare for man-made and natural disasters. He says previous grants have helped pay for things like the reverse 911 system that helped local officials evacuate homes during last fall's wildfires.
