A faith-based organization in Escondido will open a school in the tiny community of Palomar Mountain. The new campus will replace the mountain's historic one-room schoolhouse which was forced to shut down. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The Palomar Mountain School was the last remaining one-room schoolhouse in San Diego County. But the school was closed because it was too expensive to operate.
Now Light and Life Christian Schoo l in Escondido will open a portable classroom about six miles away from the original schoolhouse on land donated by the U.S. Department of Forestry.
School administrator Al Fiske says the instruction at the only school on Palomar Mountain will be quite different.
Fiske: Certainly our faith and worship is always part of our curriculum -- learning about God and learning about the creation God has given us.
Fiske says Bible lessons will part of the regular school day. So far there have been no objections to the new school. The church school group operates two other campuses and is connected to the Free Methodist Church.
