New Idea For City Hall: Combining Multiple Agencies

There’s some renewed support among San Diego leaders for an idea that would consolidate a number of governmental agencies in a new Downtown City Hall. KPBS reporter Katie Orr has details.

Third District San Diego Councilmember Todd Gloria says the idea for creating a governmental complex in a new City Hall has been floating around for awhile. But he says it was most recently raised by Port Commissioner Laurie Black at a luncheon last week. Gloria says the city, the port and the state are all looking for new facilities and there could be other partners as well.

“I think it’s also important that we engage the federal government and certainly most importantly the Navy who is also looking for a new government headquarters in Downtown. It’s pulling all those partners together to hopefully achieve some sort of savings and efficiencies that we can pass onto tax payers,” he says.

Gloria says he doesn’t know if the idea is feasible. But he says it’s possible the concept could further the process of building a new complex because it would allow the cost to be spread out among different agencies.
