Businesses and residents in San Diego County were asked today to help conserve water by shutting off their automatic sprinklers in advance of a storm expected to hit the region.
San Diego County Water Authority officials said irrigation systems can be turned off for at least a week following a storm.
"Widespread practice of this simple action in San Diego County can conserve enough water to meet the annual needs of several thousand households -- water that can be kept in storage for later use," according to an SDCWA statement.
The National Weather Service has forecast that up to an inch of rain will fall in coastal and valley areas and two inches could fall on coastal mountain slopes from a strong storm predicted to move into the region late tonight.
