The thunderstorms were likely to develop in the mountains and deserts from this afternoon through this evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said most of the precipitation would be light but there could be brief periods of heavy rainfall.

Later this week, the higher surf and dangerous rip currents that struck local beaches last week were expected to return.

A south swell from the southern hemisphere was expected to arrive Wednesday, bringing higher surf and dangerous rip currents through next Monday, according to the Weather Service.
