Imagine you're driving and you get pulled over. You whip out your smart phone and show the officer your registration and proof of insurance on the device. That's the goal of a bill approved by a California legislative committee Wednesday. Democratic Assemblyman Mike Gatto wrote the measure.
"Just about everybody I know carries a smart phone with them at all times," said Gatto. "They're glued to most people's ears and when we drive they're glued to our pockets. It just makes sense to be able to carry your documentation this way."
Gatto said the DMV already has registration records online, so the bill wouldn't cost the state much. He said most insurance companies also have proof of insurance forms online - but the bill doesn't require them to.
Gatto also said the idea could eventually save the DMV money, if enough customers opt not to receive paper registration forms.
