California's water supply continues to dwindle due to a third year of drought and a growing population.

The Natural Resources Defense Council says schools and businesses could be saving water and money at the same time.

Ronnie Cohen is the Director of Water Efficiency Policy for the NRDC.

She says landscaping in places like office parks, schools and street medians, is responsible for one-third of the business sector's water use.

"And just by improving the efficiency of irrigation systems we can save a tremendous amount," Cohen says.

She says with smart irrigation controllers that adjust for weather conditions, commercial-sized landscapes can reduce water use by 40 to 50 percent.

Cohen also says using recycled water could leave more water for home use.
