Spirit Airlines says it is starting two daily flights between San Diego and Las Vegas in early September. A week later that will jump to three daily flights. Right now, only Southwest Airlines is operating direct flights between Lindbergh Field and McCarron Airport.
The low cost airline flies mostly on the East Coast, in the Caribbean and Latin America. However, the company is expanding connections in the West.
"Its great for the economy of both cities," said Michael Pewther, sales director for Spirit Airlines. "When more people fly to San Diego and more people go to Las Vegas. That's more hotel rooms rented. That's more taxis. That's more tips in restaurants. Everybody wins."
Spirit is offering fares for $9 each way on five days in September.
San Diego's Airport Authority welcomes the third new carrier to start service in San Diego in three months.
"Economic data from the San Diego Convention and visitor's Bureau show significant benefit to the region from new air service," said Robert Gleason, Airport Authority Board Chairman.
British Airways just started non stop flights between San Diego and London. Volaris Airlines is also poised to start service to Mexico City and Guadalajara.
