AAA projects that nearly 4.8 million Californians will be traveling over the July 4th holiday.
That’s up 5.2 percent from last year and it’s the highest number in about a decade.
Cynthia Harris is with the auto club. She says 54 percent of the people they surveyed intend to make it a longer-than-normal holiday period. That’s one reason for the higher number of travelers. “The fact that it falls on a Wednesday is actually good news for consumers because this gives a little extra time for families to get out of town. A lot of people will be taking off Monday and Tuesday," said Harris.
The vast majority of travelers will be driving, but air travel is projected to be up with more than 570,000 people flying. That’s an increase of 9.8 percent from last year. Holiday airfares are expected to remain unchanged from a year ago. Meanwhile, a family of four is projected to spend an average of $807 over the holiday weekend.
