SDSU's Policy Change Gets Attention Of Lawmaker

SDSU's Policy Change Gets Attention Of Lawmaker
San Diego State University's decision to do away with an admission preference for local students got the attention of a state lawmaker.

San Diego State University's decision to do away with an admission preference for local students got the attention of a state lawmaker.

San Diego Assemblyman Marty Block hopes to get answers about the controversial decision during a public hearing at San Diego's Hoover High School. The forum is a chance for SDSU officials to explain to community leaders and the public why they decided to end the long-time practice of giving most local students priority in the admissions process.

SDSU's Sandra Cook will attend the forum. She says state budget cuts are forcing the university to shrink its student body -- and the university's local student preference policy was a casualty. She says SDSU is not the only campus limiting enrollment.

“Humbolt, Dominguez Hills, CSU Los Angeles, Stanislaus, San Bernandino -- they are for the first time managing their enrollment,” Cook said. “But they have not nearly these pressures. (SDSU) has some of the worst enrollment pressures in the whole system because it’s such an attractive place to come to.”

But Cook says SDSU is keeping some admission preference programs in tact with local schools -- including one for Sweetwater Union High School students.

The forum takes place at 6:30 tonight.
