San Diego Unified School Superintendent Bill Kowba rolled out his new plan for the district when classes begin in a couple weeks. His plan involves a team of veteran educators.
Kowba appointed nine experienced educators to watch over schools within the nine geographical areas of San Diego Unified.
These leaders, known as area superintendents, will be accountable for making sure schools under their jurisdiction are making academic gains.
Previous attempts at managing the district in this manner have faltered due to superintendent changes.
Kowba says the difference this year is that he did not bring outsiders to lead the district. He says most of leaders are local educators.
“If you take a look at most of our appointments, there are all from folks who have stayed the course in San Diego Unified,” Kowba said. “There is no revolving door. We have not cleaned the central office to make this happen.”
Kowba also announced his new plan for school reform, which calls for schools to determine their own approach for raising test scores. Before, schools were told to carry out district strategies.
