Protest Disrupts UC Regents Meeting In Sacramento

About 20 protestors disrupted a University of California Regents meeting where officials were discussing a potential 6 percent tuition increase for undergraduates.

The student and faculty protestors wore orange jump suits with signs on them that read “sentenced to debt” and “property of UC Regents.” Regents left the meeting room at the Sacramento Convention Center after protestors began clapping and singing and refused to stop. Outside, third year UC Irvine student Traci Ishigo called for an end to tuition hikes. “We are struggling to afford our education and the Regents must be terribly out of touch if they think we can afford another six percent increase,” said Ishigo.

A UC spokesman says the University would take another 250 million dollar state budget cut if voters reject Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed tax initiative this fall, and that would leave no choice but to raise tuition again.
