Thousands of San Diegans will hit the beach this Fourth of July weekend and police Capt. Al Guaderrama has some advice to make the weekend run smoothly.

“Some of our biggest concerns are traffic-related, so what we would like to do is have people make sure to get to the beach early," he said. "Parking will be at a premium and we want people to, obviously, be patient when they come down here because there will be long lines.”

City Councilman Kevin Faulconer, whose district includes several beach communities, is asking San Diegans to help make the clean-up crew’s job easier.

“We want you to come down, have a great time, but respect our environment,” Faulconer said. “Throw all your trash away to make sure that our beautiful beaches are as pristine on the 5th of July just as they are before this holiday weekend.”

Better yet, says the coalition, reduce the amount of trash you produce. Bring reusable rather than single-use water bottles, food containers, and coolers.

There will be three times as many police as usual roaming the beach this weekend, so you’d better mind your p’s and q’s. If you do happen to misbehave, you might be served some “Instant Justice.”

This is the name of a new program from the City Attorney’s Office and the police department. Certain citations issued this holiday weekend can be partially paid if you join the beach clean up effort on July 5th. The catch? You have to show up at 9 that morning.
