Federal agents trying to capture a parolee-at-large at a Del Cerro motel today heard what sounded like gunfire from inside his room, prompting a SWAT standoff that ended with the fugitive's peaceful surrender about 90 minutes later.
Deputy U.S. marshals reported the possible shooting at Days Inn & Suites Mission Valley, 5343 Adobe Falls Road, shortly after 11:30 a.m. and requested assistance from the San Diego Police Department, SDPD Detective Gary Hassen said.
The police special weapons and tactics squad deployed around the motel and officers evacuated the building as negotiators tried to contact 30-year-old parolee Cecil Wiley, who had a female companion with him in the rented room, said Omar Castillo, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service.
During the stalemate, Wiley, who also was wanted in connection with a residential burglary in San Diego, shouted statements suggesting that he had a gun, according to Castillo. Crisis counselors eventually were able to get hold of the parolee by phone.
Shortly after 1 p.m., Wiley followed directions to come out of the motel room with his hands in the air and was arrested without incident. His companion also was taken into custody for questioning, Castillo said. It was unclear if the woman might face any criminal charges over the standoff.
No injuries were reported.
