French Vichy Official Convicted of Aiding Nazis Dies

Maurice Papon, who was convicted in 1998 of crimes against humanity for his role in deporting Jews to Nazi death camps during World War II, has died. He was 96.

After the war, Papon served as Paris police chief and eventually rose to become budget minister under President Valery Giscard d'Estaing from 1978 to 1981.
