The U.N. Security Council condemned election violence in Zimbabwe after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from the presidential runoff election Monday, citing the death toll among his supporters. But journalist Peta Thornycroft of London's Daily Telegraph says the condemnation won't affect the crisis there.
"[President Robert Mugabe] and his generals, they don't care what the world says. ... They really are beyond normal restraint," she tells co-host Renee Montagne.
Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party, has called for Friday's vote to be postponed.
Meantime, hundreds of people who fled the violence in rural areas are living in squalid conditions inside MDC offices in the capital Harare.
"It's absolutely appalling. And I still don't understand why the international community isn't helping these people," Thornycroft says.
