Stimulus Money Going To New Child Development Center For Military Families

The Navy breaks ground today on the first of several new child development centers for the families of active duty military personnel.

This $10 million project is funded with stimulus dollars. When completed next year, the 25,000 square foot building will provide care for 235 children in the Point Loma area.

Brian O’Rourke of Navy Region Southwest says this is the beginning of an initiative to improve child care facilities for military families.

"This project is one of eight child development centers that will be built over the next two years in the metro San Diego area," he said. "There will also be two more built at Camp Pendleton, to serve over 90,000 military folks here in San Diego."

The Department of Defense has designated more than $200 million in stimulus money to improve quality of life for military families in San Diego families. Another $630 million is earmarked specifically for projects on Camp Pendleton.
