Driving on Interstate 5 Thursday evening, I noticed a group of demonstrators waving signs and banners on the freeway overpass near downtown San Diego. Turns out, KPBS reporter Susan Murphy talked with those folks yesterday to find out who they were, and what they are protesting.
The San Diego Veterans For Peace is the local chapter of an organization called Veterans for Peace founded in 1985. They are represented at the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization, according to the VFP website. The death of 9/11 perpetrator Osama bin Laden has prompted the group's decision to hold monthly protests against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Gil Field, spokesman for the group, told Susan those wars don't seem to make much sense anymore.
But that's unlikely, according to U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry:
So, what do you think? Does Osama bin Laden's death eliminate the need for U.S. troops to continue fighting in Afghanistan, or Iraq, or both?
