The space shuttle Discovery made its final flight this morning, piggybacking on top of a jumbo jet en route to its final destination - the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. The flight from Florida to D.C. was captured by many amateur photographers on the ground (see left).

From the beaches of Cape Canaveral, to the National Mall in Washington, folks clamored for a glimpse of the Discovery, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Thousands of Twitter followers tracked the path of the Discovery with the hashtag #spottheshuttle.

The Discovery (or rather the 747 on which it sat) landed at Dulles International Airport this morning. The WSJ reports the shuttle will be towed Thursday to the Smithsonian's annex in northern Virginia.
