The USS Carl Vinson arrived in San Diego this morning after a six month deployment. Family and friends of the Vinson crew were on hand to greet the aircraft carrier as it pulled into its homeport at Naval Base Coronado.

The Vinson Carrier Strike Group was deployed to the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility, which included the Middle East and Western Pacific. The Vinson even traveled through the Strait of Hormuz during a tense time with Iran. Veteran newsman Dan Rather was aboard the ship for the voyage through the Strait, and put together a program about his time on the Vinson called "A Dire Strait." Here's a clip:

In addition to the USS Vinson, the Carrier Strike Group consists of Carrier Air Wing 17, the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, and guided missile destroyer USS Halsey.
