Abdul-Rahman "Peter" Kassig, the American aid worker beheaded by ISIS, was a former Army Ranger who left the service to commit his life to humanitarian missions in the Middle East. It was while on one of these missions in Syria last year that Kassig was kidnapped by terrorists who would later execute him.

A Special Forces soldier who make headlines when he practiced with the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team last March has died in Afghanistan. Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart, 31, was killed by small arms fire in Kunduz Province on Nov. 14.

The military is investigating the untimely death of Marine Corps Maj. Ryan Hansen, 41, who died after collapsing during a physical training run in Germany. Hansen was a graduate of U.C. San Diego, and a native of Orange County.

The USS Fort Worth will depart Naval Base San Diego on Monday for a 16-month deployment, the longest for a Navy ship since 1973, when the USS Midway deployed for 327 days (about 10 months).
