Nebraska said Friday it intends to leave the Big 12 conference -- the second major blow in two days to what had been one of the most successful college sports allegiances in the nation.
Nebraska said it would apply for admission to the Big Ten and expects to be accepted. Should that happen, Nebraska would become the 12th team in the Big Ten.
On Thursday, Colorado said it was leaving the Big 12 for the Pac-10.
As Nebraska points east and Colorado west, the Big 12 appears to be on the verge of destruction.
Texas said it would discuss its options regarding the Big 12 at a Tuesday meeting of its board of regents, amid speculation that Texas would join longtime rival Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M in a move to the Pac-10.
All the shuffling could leave five Big 12 schools -- Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and Baylor -- without a major conference allegiance.
Meanwhile, in a move that acknowledges the consistent success of the Boise State University football program -- which rose from obscurity to post unbeaten seasons and win two Fiesta Bowl games -- the school said Friday it would leave the Western Athletic Conference in favor of the Mountain West Conference.
Boise State's new conference rivals will include the Air Force Academy, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, Texas Christian University, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Utah and Wyoming.
