Governor Jerry Brown’s budget proposal is getting mixed reactions around the state capitol. Democratic Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg said he needs to review the cuts as outlined, but overall supports the plan.
“As unappealing and painful as the governor’s proposed budget is, the only thing worse is to allow this fiscal crisis to linger,” Steinberg said.
But Republicans are saying the proposed cuts aren’t deep enough. Assembly Republican and budget committee vice-chair Jim Nielsen says the problem lies in Brown’s plan to ask voters to extend taxes.
“State government in this most difficult of budget times has not truly been downsized, rearranged, the boxes didn’t get blown up, and that needs to be looked at, it is time,” Nielsen said.
No Republicans from either house say they’re willing to vote for the plan as it stands now.
