Nathan Fletcher is currently serving in the California Assembly representing the 75th district.

Assemblyman and former mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher said he plans to join Qualcomm as senior director of corporate development after his term in the state Assembly ends on December 2.

Although San Diego's Mayor-elect Bob Filner told KPBS repeatedly he wanted Fletcher to work in his administration and hoped for an endorsement, Fletcher never endorsed Filner. He did endorse Scott Peters, who appears headed to Congress to represent the 52nd District.

“I believe in the power of innovation to improve people’s lives,” Fletcher said in a statement. “Qualcomm brings innovation to people across the globe. They are a great community partner and provide good paying jobs for San Diegans. I am proud to join their team and look forward to helping advance these endeavors.”

Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs, who supported Fletcher in his run for mayor, said he was happy to have Fletcher at his company.

“Nathan Fletcher has tremendous talent, a great mind for business and shares our vision about the potential for technology and innovation,” Jacobs said. “We are thrilled to have Nathan join us. His energy, passion and drive will be a great addition at Qualcomm.”

In his new role, Fletcher will help develop global strategies for wireless health initiatives, mobile education and intellectual property protection, according to Fletcher's staff. He will also help promote Qualcomm’s philanthropic initiatives, including employee volunteerism.

His position will not involve government relations or lobbying activities, his staff said.
