An investigation into the death of a man found near an East County freeway overpass early today led to the discovery of the bodies of a woman and two children in a Chula Vista home, authorities reported.
The investigation began about 5:30 a.m. when a California Highway Patrol officer came across an abandoned 2001 Hyundai Elantra partially blocking the far-left lane on an elevated section of State Route 125, just south of SR-54, CHP public affairs Officer Art Athans said.
An officer later spotted a man's body in a ravine about 150 feet below the roadway. No identification was found on the body, Athans said.
The CHP used registration records to trace the owner of the vehicle to a Chula Vista apartment complex. There, officers learned the family in question had moved to a home on Currant Way in the Eastlake area of the South Bay city, Athans said.
Investigators went there and, after being let inside by a complex manager, discovered the body of a boy, according to broadcast news reports.
The CHP personnel then notified Chula Vista police, who verified the death of the child and found two more bodies, those of a woman and a girl.
The man is believed to have jumped to his death, but it was unclear how the other three people died. The names of the deceased were not released.
