High Surf Pounds San Diego Beaches

Big Waves Pound San Diego Beaches

A high surf advisory is in effect in San Diego County as a southwest swell that originated from a powerful storm near New Zealand reaches Southern California.

The advisory will be in force through 5 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

"The greatest size and largest surf and swell will be Thursday and Friday,'' the agency advised.

Surf heights were expected to range between 7 and 9 feet, with sets up to 11 feet.

"The surf will gradually lower over the weekend, but still remain above average with strong rip currents both Saturday and Sunday," according to the Weather Service.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
