A man accused of having a cache of weapons at his Point Loma apartment - including an AK-47 assault rifle and 5,000 rounds of ammunition - waived his right to a preliminary hearing today and will go directly to trial in Superior Court.
Fred Seeber, 58, was arrested November ninth in connection with the discovery of 18 rifles, a submachine gun, four explosive devices, 14 handguns and the ammunition, according to authorities.
Seeber faces a potential 65 years in prison if convicted of 37 charges, including possession of a deadly weapon, possession of a destructive device and possession of a firearm by a felon, said Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Zipp.
According to a search warrant affidavit, the weapons were discovered when Harbor Police Sgt. Mike Rich went to Seeber's home last July to investigate a report alleging that the defendant's roommate had stolen a cell phone from her ex-boyfriend.
Officers armed with a search warrant stormed Seeber's home in November and seized the weapons and ammunition.
None of the guns were registered and it was determined that Seeber was an ex-felon with a 1977 conviction for robbery, police said.
Seeber - whose attorney said the conviction was removed from the defendant's record in 2010 - said the firearms were part of a collection that he inherited from his family.
Seeber's trial is set for April 18. A readiness conference is scheduled April 10.
