An investigation was underway Friday into a fire believed to have been intentionally set near San Diego State University at a so-called "mini-dorm," where $200,000 in damage was reported.
The non-injury blaze in the 5100 block of Tipton Street near Montezuma Road erupted shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson. All 11 residents were able to get out safely and were being assisted by the American Red Cross, he said.
Crews had the flames extinguished within about 15 minutes. Swanson said the fire caused about $150,000 in damage to the home and another $50,000 in damage to its contents.
Investigators determined the fire was incendiary and multiple points of origin were found in various rooms of the house, according to the spokesman. Firefighters turned over the investigation to San Diego police.
