The San Diego River Park Foundation gets special permission to clean the Southern Wildlife Preserve section of the river each year.

"More than 54 volunteers in canoes and kayaks paddled along the rive and collected more than 1,200 pounds of trash," said Rob Hutsel,

Executive Director of the San Diego River Park Foundation.

Hutsel said the volunteers also removed 107 pounds of recyclables and the most unusual item was a message in a bottle.

Volunteers along the rocky shoreline also collected trash from the river bank.

The Southern Wildlife Preserve is just south of Sea World and is home to migrating birds and the endangered Light-Footed Clapper Rail.
