What is Community “Environmental Dashboard” (ED) Technology? How can it Foster and Empower Community Engagement, Sustainability and Climate Resilience? Our modern lifestyles have caused most humans to lose connection with the natural world. We are insulated from the consequences of our actions and may not even be aware of how these actions affect the environment. How can we tap into the feedback mechanisms that served us in the past in today’s modern world to foster and empower community engagement, sustainability, and climate resilience? In this talk, we will learn about “Environmental Dashboard” (ED) technology, which is now implemented in several organizations and communities. This exciting technology reconnects people with the natural world by making flows of resources visible and promoting sustainable thought and action. Extensive research demonstrates that exposure to ED content significantly enhances systems thinking and pro-environmental and pro-community social norms and behaviors. Each installation comprises: 1) “Building Dashboard,” which dynamically displays real-time resource consumption in individual buildings to promote resource conservation. 2) “Citywide Dashboard,” which animates whole-community resource flows and environmental conditions. 3) “Community Voices,” which combines images and text to celebrate thought and action that advance social, ecological, and economic dimensions of sustainability. Interactive stories combine content to tell the story of community sustainability and resilience. How might we expand dashboard digital signage throughout organizations and cities to promote a more unified effort to take climate action and encourage pro-environmental and pro-community behaviors? The biggest event in classical music returns to San Diego June 20-29. The Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival, led by Maestro Michael Francis, is the largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players from the nation’s top orchestras, who come together in San Diego every summer to form one remarkable orchestra for a limited six-concert series. This year, the orchestra will return to two La Jolla venues where it first held performances in 2023: the UC San Diego Epstein Family Amphitheater and The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. “We are delighted to return to these two outstanding venues,” said Michael Francis, music director and conductor of the All-Star Orchestra. “Last year's concerts at UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater were a real highlight for all of us and The Conrad has truly earned its reputation as one of the country’s great chamber music halls.” Featuring musicians from top U.S. orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and more, Mainly Mozart’s All-Star Orchestra is the only orchestra of its kind in the country. Lisa Jane Morrisette is the director of audio programming and operations at KPBS, where she leads strategic visioning and execution for the station’s radio and podcasting services. In this role, she is responsible for the 24/7 operations and programming of KPBS Radio’s three channels, oversees the KPBS arts and “Explore” podcast initiatives, and manages the station’s podcast platform. Her leadership ensures KPBS consistently delivers high-quality public radio, local news and on-demand audio content that informs, enlightens and entertains audiences across the San Diego region.

Clay Open Studio is an opportunity for students to practice the clay skills they have already learned in our clay classes. Students have the chance to work in our studio using either hand building techniques or working on a pottery wheel. This is not an instructional class. There will be no instructor. By signing up for Clay Open Studio, you will receive 1/2 a bag of clay, 1 bisque fire, 1 glaze fire, and use of our glazes. We work with midfire clay. No outside clay is allowed (because disastrous things can happen in the kilns!) Since there is no instruction in Open Studio, some clay experience is necessary. You must have taken one of our clay courses to participate, or have clay experience from elsewhere. If you are throwing work on the wheel, we allow you to come in on the Monday following the first Clay Open Studio date to trim your work.

Malashock Dance & Outside the Lens, in partnership with Doug McMinimy, present a free exhibit and reception featuring dance photography created by students in grades 8-12. Students participated in a workshop with renowned dance photographer Doug McMinimy to explore technology and techniques for capturing dance on camera. The students worked with educators from Outside the Lens and Malashock Dance Company dancers. Enjoy a beautiful exhibit and complimentary beverages and snacks.
