Create a professional arm-rod-and-mouth puppet of your very own from Rene Rubalcava, owner and puppeteer of LV Puppet Studio of Las Vegas who learned the art of puppet making from a Jim Henson Muppeteer. What better time to create your own one-of-a-kind fuzzy monster than October?! In this workshop, we guide you from start to finish as you select, cut, hot glue and assemble the pieces and personality of your own customized puppet. No sewing is required in this workshop. Students bring their puppets to life with their own unique interests and imaginations, and by choice and placement of different face details. Each one is unique! The Comic-Con Art Show is open to the public... you do not need a badge to come in and enjoy, or purchase artwork. However, everyone entering the Art Show is expected to comply with all Terms and Conditions expected of our attendees. You’ll see numerous original drawings, paintings, sculptures, pieces of jewelry, and more “unusual” items, all created and displayed by professional and amateur artists. If you want to add something to your collection, many of the pieces are offered for purchase by Silent Auction* or Quick-Sale. Bidder numbers and Art Show information can be obtained from the administration table inside the Art Show. You must be 18 or older and have legal identification to purchase artwork, and payments may be made with cash or a credit card. The Art Show also displays the nominated books and comics for this year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Come and see the best new works of the year! Everyone in the community is invited to Light Up a Life, a special candle-lighting ceremony to celebrate the people whose lives have warmed their hearts and whose memories illuminate their lives. The Elizabeth Hospice will host this family-friendly event on Sunday, November 12, 2023, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the California Center for the Arts. Light Up a Life blends inspirational messages, music, and a memorial ceremony to lift the hearts of those touched by loss, illness or sorrow. Admission and parking are free. Registration is required by November 3. All attendees will have the opportunity to light a candle during the memorial ceremony. In support of The Elizabeth Hospice’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested. SWANS is a collective including artists Nancy Buchanan, Judith Dancoff, Jane C. Mi, Hillary Mushkin, Sheila Pinkel and elin o’Hara slavick, who mine their personal connections to nuclear physics in artworks that challenge the nuclear state. The group explores the past and future of nuclear proliferation, with explosive visuals that interrogate the legacy of the bomb, nuclear power and uranium mining. Since 1945, atomic bombs have altered global politics, ecosystems and even our biology. Can art alter those landscapes?
